It happens without warning.  One earthquake.  Then another.  They set each other off in a chain that rips the world apart.  Buildings are toppled and the landscape is altered.  The people who survive the quakes struggle to live without the simplest things like running water and reliable shelter.

Then the real trouble comes.  When the earth roiled with the quakes, dirt from miles beneath the surface was exposed to the air for the first time in millions of years.  Ancient viruses and bacteria came into contact with humans with no immunity.  Some of us change, mutating.  Skin is shed, replaced by stone scales.  Humans call these new creatures monsters, ashers, Fire Eaters.  They live to burn the world and consume the ashes for sustenance.  And if an asher get his rough stone hands on you, your only hope is that the fire kills you before they feast on your flesh.

Bullets won’t kill the Fire Eaters.  Normal weapons have no effect on them.  But there’s a secret.  One way to kill the Fire Eaters.  It isn’t a guarantee for survival, but it evens the odds, allowing humans to carve out new lives on the Burning Earth.

THE LAST NIGHT

After a chain of earthquakes ravaged the globe, long-dormant viruses were released into the air, turning many humans into creatures with an appetite for human ashes. Erica and a group of survivors are barricaded in a half-destroyed hotel, and every day brings them closer to being devoured by the seemingly unstoppable ashers. Even though Erica is a fighter, she's tired of just surviving...

When a mysterious stranger rides into town, everything changes. Jake knows how to kill the ashers, and he's the only man brave enough to leave the safety of the hotel in search of a better life. Erica and Jake make a deadly fighting team, with even hotter sparks flying between them. But Jake has survived this long because he rides alone. He doesn't trust easily, especially in this harsh new reality. Can Erica convince Jake that living is more than just surviving to the next day?

From Nico Rosso:

The apocalypse has always been on people’s minds.  It permeates myths and stories from the beginning of organized society.  Some cultures have gone through it, disappearing.  Others have fought thorough disaster to adapt and flourish.  That very survival is what makes the idea so interesting.  It is the ultimate challenge.  Break down the world, then see what the people do.  On the Burning Earth, there is peril and hope, strife and love.  It was a great canvas to create, giving my characters plenty of opportunities to show the inherent strength and resiliency of the human being.
